The institute has purchased Business Travel Accident Insurance and MEDEX travel services for all benefits-eligible (20 hours per week or more) BTI employees. The Business Travel Accident Insurance coverage provides a benefit payment in case of death and or dismemberment occurring while on BTI-related travel. The MEDEX travel services include medical assistance, medical transportation, travel assistance, and personal assistance services, 24 hours a day 7 days a week, for those on BTI-related travel.
The insurances cover all work-related travel, whether it is local, domestic or international. The domestic and international coverage includes personal sojourns incidental to and associated with BTI business-related travel. The coverage does not include family members or others traveling with you.
A schedule of benefits provided under both the Business Travel Insurance and MEDEX policies are available upon request. The death benefit for employees earning $100,000 per year or less is $250,000. For those earning more than $100,000, the death benefit is $500,000. Up to $100,000 of medical evacuation and repatriation services are provided under the MEDEX policy.
The Human Resources Department will assist with filing travel accident claims. The MEDEX services are delivered directly by MEDEX staff upon contact.
Your MEDEX Identification Card and a description of coverage should be carried with you.
Please note that this coverage is in addition to standard Worker’s Compensation insurance. All work-related accidents must still be reported through the Human Resources office.
Who is a BTI employee?
If you receive a BTI paycheck you are a BTI employee.
How many hours per week do I have to work to be considered full-time?
20
So if I’m running a “BTI errand” locally, I’m covered?
Yes, as long as it is bona fide BTI business and not just a stop-off on the way to or from home.
So traveling companions who accompanying me when I’m on BTI business are not covered but my personal side-trips are?
Yes, companions are not covered but your personal excursions, associated with a bona fide business trip, are considered part of business travel and covered by these policies.
So how does BTI know when I’m on business?
The best way to make sure that you are covered for trips is to file a BTI Travel Authorization Form. Travel that has not been authorized or funded, or is not known to BTI will be questioned and may not be covered.
For local travel, coverage is in place as long as you are on bona fide BTI business.
So if I start my business trip from home when does the coverage start?
Coverage begins at the origin of travel whether it is from your home or BTI. Coverage ends similarly. Commutation to and from work is not covered.
Do I need to select a beneficiary?
No. You only need to select a beneficiary if you want the insurance to be paid someone other than you or your estate. To change your beneficiary ask the Human Resources office for a form.
