Working Safely at Boyce Thompson Institute

Boyce Thompson Institute (BTI) is comprised of a variety of diverse facilities that aid staff in their plant research efforts. There are unique potential hazards in a workplace such as ours and these include the use of radioisotopes and hazardous chemicals necessary for some of the investigations we perform. This Institution is committed to providing resources and training that allow our staff to Work Safely in their plant research explorations.

An important component of these resources is the maintenance and support of an integral and pro-active safety committee. The committee’s principle role is to foster a safe work environment at BTI. The committee accomplishes this through a variety of activities that include monthly meetings, internal lab inspections, sponsored training sessions, accident report and regulation reviews. The development and content of this website is also a safety committee responsibility.

The Cornell University Office of Environmental Health and Safety (Cornell'S) maintains a very comprehensive site devoted to safety and we provide numerous links to various areas within it. Our site is designed to efficiently direct BTI staff to safety information that is relavent to employment here. We have included information that is specific to BTI and have made decisions about what to include based on our science activities and facilities.

We hope the information provided here is useful and we welcome comments. Send safety-related comments or queries to any Safety Committee Member. Direct any site-related comments you may have to Larry Russell at ler4@cornell.edu.
