A technician position to support the synthesis of small-molecule libraries for screening at the high-throughput screening centers at NIH. These libraries will be based on structurally unique lead structures obtained from arthropods and nematodes. Funding is available for three years, beginning in the spring of 2008.
Research responsibilities of the successful candidate will include chromatography of synthetic intermediate as well as final products, spectroscopic characterization of isolated natural products as well as synthetic compounds, inventorying purchased chemicals as well as synthetic libraries, and maintaining adequate supplies of chemicals and chromatography resources.
Demonstrated proficiency with some or all of the research methods that will be used is essential for this position. Good interpersonal skills are required for maintaining interactions with postdocs and graduate students in our laboratories. Prior experience with synthetic chemical research is not necessary.

Research Assistant position available immediately for a highly motivated individual with a BS or MS degree and a solid background in microbiology, biochemistry, virology, or genetics. Position is approximately 70% research, 30% laboratory maintenance. Responsibilities include routine PCR, DNA and RNA isolation and manipulation, animal cell culture, cloning, sequencing, protein purification, etc. Studies examine the molecular biology and pathology of a large DNA virus (baculovirus) that infects insects. Our research includes studies of virus entry and exit from host cells, and the regulation of viral gene expression.
Requires good organizational, analytical, and communication skills, and previous lab exprience. We are looking for a congenial, energetic, and focused individual with the appropriate skills in biochemistry and molecular biology, and a desire to work in an interesting research environment. This position is available immediately and involves supporting a research program that is investigating the molecular basis of bacterial pathogenesis and plant immunity. Responsibilities include overseeing all aspects of the organization and operation of a molecular biology/genomics laboratory (70%) and assistance of postdoctoral researchers with their experiments (30%). We study the interaction between tomato and a bacterial pathogen Pseudomonas syringae and our research involves plant-pathogen assays in the lab and greenhouse, and molecular biology, genomics, and biochemical experiments.
B.S. or M.S. in molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics, plant pathology, or a related field. Demonstrated experience with molecular biology techniques is preferred. Strong record keeping, communication, organizational, and computer skills are essential. Must be reliable, be able to work independently, have initiative, and enjoy working with people in a scientific setting. This position is for between 20 and 30 hours per week and includes full-time benefits. Salary depends on experience and qualifications.
