Protecting our diversity: A statement from David Stern

by | Feb 9, 2017

“BTI is an international institution. The global reach of science, and its ability to traverse and dissolve cultural and national boundaries in the pursuit of knowledge and its applications, count among our core strengths.

BTI scientists and staff hail from more than forty countries. We maintain formal research agreements with organizations in China, Japan, the Philippines, and Peru. Externally-funded research projects unite BTI science with pursuits in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and beyond.21st-century science is only possible because the global dissemination of information, and the physical movement of scientific practitioners, know few restrictions. The United States has traditionally been a leader in hosting, training and promulgating the global reach of science. We at BTI demonstrate and uphold these practices and values, accompanied by respect for other peoples and cultures, a mutual thirst for knowledge, and a core conviction that BTI’s discoveries will benefit society. BTI welcomes and celebrates its diversity.

Recent events have raised serious and pragmatic concerns for current or prospective international staff. The January 27, 2017 Executive Order on Immigration suspended entry into the US by both immigrants and non-immigrants from seven countries (Iraq, Iran, Syria, Sudan, Libya, Somalia and Yemen) for a period of 90 days. In the face of this adversity, BTI reaffirms a foundational belief that the principles of social justice are upheld by scientific discovery. Indeed, science is a uniquely productive form of diplomacy. We uphold our mission to advance and communicate scientific knowledge, and recommit to our core values of Mutual Respect and Collaboration.

Admittedly, the present situation is difficult, worrying and fluid. BTI has committed resources to address ensuing challenges faced by members of the BTI community.”
